The Radio and Television Presenters (RTP) Awards which started in Ghana and has spread its tentacles to Africa is an award scheme I will love to see stand tall among all awards scheme in Ghana because of what this column stands for. I was very glad for this scheme but at the moment, I can only wish because I have not been impressed about the improvement of the awards scheme.
It is always great to see an award scheme spring up to award personnel from the field you have been writing about for over a decade. The media which is seen as the fourth arm of government definitely needs a scheme that will push the industry players to give their best and always run from shoddy journalism taking into consideration their role in every country.
RTP started as a magazine TV show that sought to bring to the public what goes on in the studios especially the radio station ones. The show was a build to a main clash between the players in the radio where the mystery about radio presenters as far as what they do in the various radio stations are concerned.
The main show came to live and was a great success with huge following because the majority of Ghanaians didn’t know what goes on in a radio studio. Fortunately the TV show called “Presenters Guide” hosted by Prince Mckay boss of the now RTP Awards.
From the above, it’s obvious the initiator of RTP knew where he was heading because he meticulously prepared for the RTP Awards even when he was hosting the TV show. I am one person who felt glad for the conception of the RTP. Sometimes you just want to ask the universe why this scheme cannot get it right and it’s obvious there are few elements that constitute to the struggle of the scheme.
First off, my reason is the boss of the scheme who happens to be Prince Mckay. His strength as a person is certainly his weakness when it comes to the RTP. The gentleman is mentally tough and that’s the reason he has not given up on the scheme. He has taken the most backlash as an awards scheme on air than most awards schemes in Ghana, yet he continues to move forward because perhaps he alone sees what he imagined before ‘delivering’ the scheme.
Prince’s strong headedness makes it really difficult for people to bring on board their ideas as I monitor from afar. Only his ideas should be acted upon and nothing else which is a little heavy since no one is repository of knowledge. Until he is able to work with people and trust them irrespective of previous experience, the scheme will continue to suffer.
The second reason I suspect is Ghanaians especially industry players not giving the scheme a chance to prove them wrong. As a matter of fact, Ghanaians can be pardoned about this feeling because they feel they have waited for far too long for the right things to be done. Concerning the rate at which the world is moving, it is almost impossible to keep repeating the same errors because that will definitely not help.
Research for the scheme is another big problem but the organizers always assure the people that they have it covered yet they commit unforgivable blunders. Like nominating people who have stopped presenting on radio and TV after years, misspelling names of radio and TV stations etc.
Last but not least of the top three I consider the bane of the scheme is the perception that keeps going round that some winners have had to pay in order to win. Truth is that any human institution has flaws like this but when it keeps coming up, then the cause for worry erupts and one is tempted to believe the RTP is not credible. Awarding Patrick Osei Agyeman AKA Countryman Songo of Adom TV the topmost award was one of the biggest problems that rocked the scheme. What it meant is that Songo is the measurement of Radio and TV presentation in Ghana. Even a day old knows Songo could sweep the Most Popular but not the RTP Personality.
However, I still think the RTP must survive to clean the media landscape because we so need this decontamination since the bodies mandated to do this cleansing seem to be sleeping.
